DESCRIPTION:

MONO is a piece inspired by ancient Egyptian architecture, design, and craftsmanship. We spent two weeks in Egypt exploring, gathering inspiration, and working in close dialogue with Egyptian furniture designers, engineers, and artisans at the Pinocchio furniture factory.

Together with Josephine Bourghardt we took inspiration from the intense expression and identity of the monumental and monolithic architecture and the recurring shapes and textures of objects and sculptures. This was then translated into a stool with its strong identity and details honoring Egypt’s historical and local craftsmanship. We call it MONO due to its monolithic, monochromatic, and mono-materialistic appearance. MONO also works as an anagram for the word Moon, which was seen as an ”eye” of particular gods in Egyptian mythology/religion.

After four days of intense production in Damietta, we drove back to Cairo and ended our trip with a presentation of MONO at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation.

MONO is made of solid oak, glued in horizontal and vertical layers. It was then CNC:d to its rough shape and finished by amazing artisans who hand-carved the seat, helping us reach our desired look. We left the carving marks to symbolize the historic craftsmanship and ornamentation of ancient Egypt.
